Getting a Food Licence in Uttar Pradesh could not have been easier.

Food Business Operators have to pick from three different Food Licence categories. They must go through with this process since the Government requires all FBOs to register for a Food Licence before they begin running their establishment.

As tricky as this registration might be, here is some significant information about the Food Licence Registration process. Establishments have to meet a couple of requirements if they are planning on going through the licencing process. Additionally, they have to pick the right licence when they are going through the registration process since there are penalties for registering under the wrong category.

These categories are the annual turnover of the business, the number of branches that they are planning on opening in other Indian states, and the specifics of the type of company that they are planning on running.

  • Basic Registration - If the annual turnover of the business is less than 12 lacs, the food business operator shall get registered with Registration Form A under the Basic Licence.
  • State Licence - If the annual turnover of a company is between 12 lacs to 20 crores, the food business operator shall apply for State license Form B.
  • Central Licence - If the annual turnover of an establishment is above 20 crores, the food business operator should apply for Central License Form B.

The State authorities of a particular state handle the issuing of State licenses, while the main pan India office handles the process for a Central Licence. Another important aspect of getting a Food Licence is that it can be applied for through private websites. These websites have some knowledge of handling the process since they have experience doing this for others. Additionally, some people work through this process offline as well, if coordinating the process through the internet gets challenging.

What are the roles of the FSSAI?

Other than forcing Food Business Operators to go through with the registration process, the FSSAI also has several other duties that they work on. Here are some of their additional roles

  • Framing of Regulations to lay down food safety standards
  • Laying down guidelines for accreditation of laboratories for food testing
  • Providing scientific advice and technical support to the Central Government
  • Contributing to the development of international technical standards in food
  • Collecting and collating data regarding food consumption, contamination, emerging risks etc.
  • Disseminating information and promoting awareness about food safety and nutrition in India

Overall, the FSSAI is an autonomous body under the Indian Government’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and put together several smaller and older Acts to create what it has today, consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. It takes the front seat when protecting and promoting public health through strict regulations and supervision of food safety. The FSSAI has been working hard toward meeting this target through the increase in several inspections and by implementing new processes internally to fasten the pace.
