The process of coordinating with the FSSAI in Karnataka to register a Food Business Operator

Although the process of registering for a food licence under the FSSAI is mandatory, the Government has not done enough to make the process easy for people without technical knowledge. Although the process has a few simple steps, applicants can handle it through the office or multiple websites, but there are a few aspects that have to be clarified.

While the Government made the process of getting an FSSAI registration mandatory, and they posted all the requirements to complete the process, online, there are a lot of requirements that might need the assistance of someone who knows how the process works. Additionally, if the Food Business Organization handling this process doesn’t get the right licence, they could face fines and penalties. Furthermore, they have to apply for and use the licence for the very same purpose mentioned in the registration form. If the establishment decides to handle a different vertical, they have to make a change to their FSSAI registration.

When handling the registration process online, websites do not only allow the applicants and candidates to go through the process of registering but also making these changes to their forms, correcting any errors, even renewing the licence, past its expiration date.

Three types of FSSAI Food Licences

  • Basic Registration - If a Food Business Operator has an annual turnover of under 12 lakhs, they have to register using Registration Form A.
  • State Licence - If a Food Business Operator has the annual turnover of anything between 12 to 20 crores they have to apply for State license Form B
  • Central Licence - If Food Business Operators have an annual turnover of above 20 crores, they have to apply for Central License Form B.

A lot of these pointers are estimated based on the current turnover and future turnover. Furthermore, there are additional rules that mention opening multiple branches across the country, even without more than 20 crores in turnover, needs a registration through the main office in Delhi. Other than handling the right licence and paperwork, FSSAI conducts multiple inspections making sure all the requirements are maintained.

Is there a better way to get through the registration process?

While it seems challenging to get through the application process, there are better ways of getting this done, through assistance from private parties. Since they go through the process often, they know how it works and how the wheels turn. Either getting this done through the website or an agency is the best bet.

There are instances where establishments have been accused of issues that might not be correct. In such cases, instead of getting a licence taken away, these can be fought in court. Getting in touch with a team that has done this before is crucial. They should know the system well and be very responsive by providing updates in no time at all. If a third party organization is handling the application process on behalf of another establishment, all information and details should be provided.
